What to do on Mothers Day in York

Visit York

The historic city of York is Choc Affair’s home and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. With lots of things to do and places to visit, there’s so much to discover regardless of whether you’ve been to the city before or not, and with Mother’s Day coming up, it might just provide the perfect day out!

Perhaps the best thing about York is that it’s the kind of place you can visit and enjoy without having to meticulously plan exactly what you are going to do before you get there. It has great shops, places to eat and lots of fascinating things to learn. The city’s beautiful architecture alone could keep you busy for an entire day; from the historic buildings that line the Shambles, to the world famous York Minster, there’s plenty to see even if you never enter a single building!

If you do want to put a bit of planning into a Mother’s Day outing, there are many options available which suit a variety of interests. We might be biased, but a chocolate-centric visit to York is the best kind of visit to York. At the top of the Shambles in Kings Square, York’s Chocolate Story is a fascinating insight into the history of chocolate in the city. You can learn a lot, and, unsurprisingly, you can indulge a lot, too!

Many mums enjoy Bettys Tea Rooms, and it’s not hard to see why if you’ve ever visited. Tea, coffee, cakes and yes, chocolate in a refined setting make Bettys a great place to stop and have a break during your stay.

If you can pull yourself away from the chocolate related activities, there are lots of great museums to visit in York. The stunning York Castle Museum currently has a fantastic exhibition about World War One, and their Victorian Street is always a fun and interesting diversion. If your mum is artistically inclined, York Art Gallery is free to enter and showcases 700 years of Western works, from Belotto to Lowry.

A visit to the shops is a great way to finish off a day visit to York, and you really can find everything you could ask for, from a variety of clothes shops that span from the mainstream to the esoteric, to all sorts of fun trinkets and antiques. Explore the city through shopping and you never know where it might take you!

Show your mum you really care by giving her a great experience in a great city, and visit York this Mother’s Day!
